Why Hire a Nanny in Bali?
Hiring a Bali nanny can transform your family holiday from tiring to tranquil, and ensure you return home rested, whether you leave your children alone with the nanny or use your nanny as an extra set of hands.
That’s right. While many people think that hiring a nanny means leaving the kids alone with the nanny, you absolutely don't have to. More often than not, we haven't!
As the saying goes, “Many hands make light work," and a nanny can alleviate much of that daily parental stress we all feel by stepping in to help manage everyday tasks.
Tasks Your Bali Nanny Can Help With:
While your nanny can look after your children if you want to go on an adults-only date night or visit tourist sites that may not interest the kids, their support extends far beyond that. Here are a few ways your nanny can help make your holiday smoother, less stressful, and more enjoyable:
👉🏼Pool Fun: Want to kick back with a book and cocktail by the pool? Your nanny can be your extra pair of eyes on the kids, or can ever jump in and play with them, allowing you to relax or even enjoy a poolside massage.
👉🏼Nap Time Help: If your little one needs a nap, your nanny can sit in the hotel room with them, so you don’t have to miss out on valuable pool time with the other kids.
👉🏼Getting the Kids Ready: They can help get the kids dressed and ready for dinner, ensuring a smooth transition from pool to mealtime. You can even take your time getting yourself ready and enjoy a peaceful shower, knowing the kids are being well looked after.
👉🏼Help at Restaurants: Imagine this - you’re sitting down to a delicious meal and, for once, you can actually enjoy it! Your nanny can feed the kids, hold the baby, or entertain the little ones in the playground while you enjoy your meal and uninterrupted conversations with your partner or friends.
👉🏼Theme Park Assistance: At places like Waterbom, your nanny can be that extra set of hands, keeping an eye on younger children who might not be ready for the bigger rides. They can stay with the little kids in the splash zone, while you enjoy the more adventurous attractions with your older kids. And since many nannies go to these parks a lot, they know all the insider tricks, saving you precious time and making the experience even more fun.

👉🏼Support for Additional Needs: If you have a child with additional needs, a Bali nanny can provide support and respite, helping your whole family have a more enjoyable experience. The Balinese are known for being kind and patient, and their supportive nature can truly make a world of difference to your experience. In fact, I know our nanny recently did training on how to be a better nanny to kids with Autism, and ADHD.
👉🏼Local Knowledge & Communication: Nannies are locals who know the area inside and out, so naturally they can provide valuable insights into the best attractions, dining options, and activities for your family. They can also help bridge any language barriers, ensuring effective communication with locals, making your experience smoother and more enjoyable.
👉🏼Assistance with Kids Club: Younger children might not feel comfortable in a kids' club alone, but your nanny can join them while you enjoy some downtime with your older kids in the pool.
P.S. Most kids clubs require kids under four to have someone stay with them.
👉🏼One-on-One Time with Your Kids: If you’ve got multiple children, hiring a nanny can give you precious one-on-one time with each child, something you might not get at home. A nanny can also offer one-on-one attention to different kids, engaging them in activities tailored to their interests.

What You Need to Know About Hiring a Bali Nanny:
Where to Find a Nanny:
While many Bali nanny services exist and many hotels will even offer to book a nanny for you, I believe that the best way to find anything is through word of mouth. We found our nanny, Eka, through a trusted friend’s, Louisa's recommendation.
Ask around in expat communities, use reliable platforms like Bali Facebook groups, or tap into your own networks. (I'll also share Eka’s details below.)
Costs of a Bali Nanny:
On average, Bali nannies charge between $7 and $12 per hour for two children, with a minimum hire time of 6 hours.
If you're looking for a top-notch nanny with strong English skills and relevant experience, like Eka, you can expect to pay on the higher end of that scale.
We pay Eka $12.50 per hour, plus a daily travel fee.
While Eka falls on the higher end of the budget, I find it absolutely reasonable for someone so qualified and with the amount of respite she provides. Eka has previously worked permanently for an Australian family and is wonderful to get along with.
Many Bali nannies (including Eka) also come equipped with first aid training, vaccinations, and even bring toys, arts, and crafts to keep your kids entertained.

Nanny Etiquette:
Should You Cover Meals, Drinks, & Entrance Fees?
Yes, if you plan on going out with your nanny, you'll need to cover their expenses, such as meals or entry fees to attractions. While most nannies bring their own food and drinks, covering costs when you're out with them is considered polite.
Note: If you plan on taking your nanny to attractions like Waterbom Park, be sure to check if they offer a local ticket price, as many nannies can enter at a reduced rate. Waterbom Park does have this option.
When & How to Pay:
You will likely be required to pay your nanny at the end of each day, unless you've agreed otherwise.
Tipping & Gifts:
Tipping isn’t expected but is always appreciated, and rounding up their daily payment is an easy way to do this if you feel they've gone above and beyond.
As for gifts, while they are a lovely thought, most nannies (and drivers) appreciate cash the most, as it allows them to better provide for their families. For example, $12 can purchase a large bag of rice - a staple in the Balinese diet.

Additional Tips When Booking a Bali Nanny:
Check References & Trust Your Gut:
While qualifications and experience are important, it's crucial to choose someone who feels like the right fit for your family. Trust your instincts when making your decision and do your due diligence with references.
Establish Communication & Hard Rules: Before you arrive, establish how you'll communicate with your nanny during your stay, and boundaries incase the kids try to tell them they’re allowed to do something, and they’re not!
Apps like WhatsApp are great for keeping in touch and ensuring everyone is on the same page.
Orientation Is Key:
If possible, schedule a FaceTime call with your nanny before your arrival to build excitement and familiarity.

Ease Off Gradually: Start by having the nanny with your kids while you’re also around. Once your kids are accustomed to your nanny, and you’re feeling comfortable that they’re in great heads, you can start leaving them for longer periods. Give it time and don’t rush the process.
Remember to give your nanny breaks:
Balinese nannies are known for their politeness, so they might not speak up when they need something, so be sure to give your nanny opportunity to eat and use the restroom without the kids. A well-rested nanny is much better equipped to keep your little ones happy and engaged!

Final Thoughts
Whether you’re looking to get a break, enjoy some quality time with your partner, or simply relax by the pool with a good book, hiring a Bali nanny service is worth every penny.
Not only can it significantly reduce stress, but it also allows you to prioritize self-care and recharge during your family holiday.
And the number of times I've heard about kids crying when it's time for their nanny to go (including our own family), speaks volumes about the bonds they form.
And of course, if you're travelling to Bali with Kids, don't forget to pack a Bali Travel Diary & Activity Book!
